    Xanax tolerance reset

This is in response to JW's question below about the "rules" docs use about prescribing Xanax/alprazolam. However, since it works so quickly, many folks start taking it more and more often, until it gets to the point that they are taking it daily. Not all docs feel this way, but here's how I think about it. Then they start taking it as soon as they feel it wear off. Of course, I am not suggesting that, if you are taking this anti-anxiety drug, you should stop it. Before you know it, you are taking it 3-4 times per day. The big problem is all because of your brain's laziness. Halcion is the only similar sedative that has a shorter half-life (and that one has even more problems). It is also quite lipophilic, meaning that it quickly gets into the brain. This is fine if you just take it on those rare anxious moments where you need something to get through it. The quicker a drug works, especially one which makes you feel good in some way, the more addicting it is, as the cause (taking it) and effect (feeling it) are close in time, making it very reinforcing. See, your brain makes it's own natural Xanax-like substance, called GABA. GABA works by inhibiting the brain's natural tendency to speed up. Despite decades of basic and clinical research, our understanding of how benzodiazepines tend to lose their efficacy over time (tolerance) is at least incomplete. This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. In appears that tolerance develops relatively quickly for the sedative and anticonvulsant actions of benzodiazepines, whereas tolerance to anxiolytic and amnesic effects probably does not develop at all. In light of this evidence, we review the current evidence for the neuroadaptive mechanisms underlying benzodiazepine tolerance, including changes of (i) the receptor (subunit expression and receptor coupling), (ii) intracellular changes stemming from transcriptional and neurotrophic factors, (iii) ionotropic glutamate receptors, (iv) other neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine systems), and (v) the neurosteroid system. From the large variance in the studies, it appears that either different (simultaneous) tolerance mechanisms occur depending on the benzodiazepine effect, or that the tolerance-inducing mechanism depends on the activated Shortly after their development in the 1960s, benzodiazepines became very popular as they exerted many desirable effects such as reduction of anxiety, anticonvulsant properties, and myorelaxation combined with a rather low toxicity [1]. However, their use is associated with many side effects precluding their long-term use, including sedation, amnesia, cognitive impairment, and ataxia. Even though guidelines generally recommend limiting benzodiazepines to short-term use, long-term use still often occurs.

Benzodiazepine dependence is caused by your GABA-A receptors becoming dependant on your OWN gamma-Aminobutyruc acid, aka GABA. Tolerance also grows on these receptors, but it resets because your brain recycles the excess receptors when you are through withdrawal and your GABA levels are back to normal. The benzodiazepines themselves attach to different "sub-receptors" called a1, a2, a3 etc... When a benzo attaches to one of these sub-receptors it causes GABA to be released and to bind to the GABA-A receptor. Tolerance ALSO builds on these "sub-receptors", but it NEVER resets back to normal, because your brain does not recycle these specific "excess sub-receptors." If you were on 4mg Klonopin, which affects only a2 and a3 sub-receptors, and then you stop, go through withdrawals, and If you take a small dose of Phenobarbital after this (barb affects a7 or a6 receptors) you will feel strong effects, but if you take a small dose of Klonopin many years after this, you will still not feel it. I learned this the hard way while recklessly using flubromazolam, and within 5 days I built permanent tolerance equivalent to 4mg clonazepam. Benzodiazepine is drug tolerance to benzodiazepine (duh). Examples of benzos are Valium, Xanax, Clonazepam, and Lorazepam. There are many more and they all act strongly on GABA as allosteric modulators – which increases the activity of the protein. Benzo reversal is about reversing the tolerance to benzo type drugs and restoring original effects. After long exposure to benzodiazepines GABA receptors down regulate and decouple. Repeating the use of Benzodiazepine drugs can lead to both physical and psychological dependence, and possibly terrible or even fatal symptoms can appear upon the sudden withdrawal of benzos, when the person is dependent and used to high dosages. What loses effectiveness are sedative and muscle relaxant effects which act on the GABAa receptors and is why they are so dangerous upon reversal (think opposite of muscle relaxant).
