    Prednisolone horses

I had a post recently in another thread re: a bite wound perpetrated by a horse who is on prednisolone for heaves. On the other hand the behavior you describe Vicki is common in almost every horse that lives in a band: there are those they give deference to and those they threaten, it is the natural way of horses. A friend questioned me as to whether it is possible that this horse's aggressiveness toward my other horse might be a side effect of the pred. This horse is not the least bit aggressive toward people and has never shown this behavior toward other horses I had previously. BUT I am convinced my dog is more aggressive after a long term steroid use... If the pred was causing increased agressiveness, a more dependable sign would be a more generalized aggressive response. I figured it was just a personality conflict, but now I wonder. Dr OI seem to remember reading somewhere -- which, of course, makes it true :-) -- that horses to do not metabolize prednisolone to the active steroid. It could be a coincindence, but i put the two together immediately and my vet had confirmed it was possible but no real conclusive evidence. If the horses testosterone receptors are very sensitive they may be stimulated by the prednisolone. It is not usual for the change to be permanant joj and I suspect your dog learned some behaviors that he found rewarding. jojo I think it is possible though not a common effect. Therefore, prednisolone had little or no therapeutic effect in horses. This is different from humans and at least some other animals. Yes Maureane but you don't have it quite right. A commonly available drug is prednisone which is inactive until converted by the liver: this is the form that horses do not use well. Certain anti-inflammatory drugs, such as dexamethasone and prednisolone, have long been blamed for causing laminitis in horses—a painful, life-threatening condition. Recently, however, a group of researchers from the United Kingdom comprehensively reviewed the literature, conducted their own trial, and concluded that prednisolone has been getting a bad rap for years. Glucocorticoids, potent anti-inflammatory medications, benefit many horses with a wide range of medical conditions, such as certain joint, respiratory, skin, and ocular diseases, just to name a few. One of the most commonly used glucocorticoids, prednisolone, can be administered orally with ease, is economical, and frequently used for chronic medical conditions. Owners and veterinarians using prednisolone over long periods have always been nervous and on guard for signs of impending laminitis—uncomfortable shifting of weight from foot to foot, a reluctance to move, lying down more frequently, and the characteristic sawhorse stance. Considering that no direct causal link has been established between the risk of laminitis and the use of prednisolone, Jordan and colleagues reviewed the medical records of 416 horses treated with prednisolone by a single ambulatory equine practice, as well as 814 control horses. The study authors found that 16 (3.8%) of treated horses were diagnosed with laminitis following prednisolone administration. While these numbers may seem concerning; consider 46 (5.7%) of the 814 control horses that were not treated with prednisolone also developed laminitis, and 12 (1.5%) of those horses were euthanized.

Mineralocorticoids (aldosterone) are so named because they are important in maintaining electrolyte homeostasis. However, mineralocorticoids also trigger a broader range of functions in nonclassic target cellular sites, including some effects on wound healing after injury. In addition, a chronic and inappropriate (relative to intravascular volume and dietary sodium intake) increase in aldosterone secretion evokes a wound healing response in the absence of tissue injury. This can lead to antialdosterone (eg, , decrease synthesis of interleukins and numerous other proinflammatory cytokines, suppress cell-mediated immunity, reduce complement synthesis, and decrease production and activity of leukocytes. Unsurprisingly then, glucocorticoids are by far the most efficacious anti-inflammatory drugs. They are also the most commonly used anti-inflammatory drugs. However, because their pharmacologic and physiologic effects are so broad, the potential for adverse effects is considerable.
